Bun-Bun, Sluggy and Pulp City Join Forces

Sluggy Freelance is an online webcomic site that has been going for years with 1000s of fans.
Recently, they found the Pulp City Kickstarter and loved it. Time for some classic comic cross-over fun!

From the Sluggy site -
"THIS JUST IN!- So after contacting the Pulp Monsters guys they contacted me back interested in a cross promotion. Their kickstarter freebees are a team of Villains called The Grimm, lead by John Grimsham, and they feel like a cross between gremlins and mole-men, but with Super Powers. So I said "What about a grimm in a Bun-bun costume with an oversized switchblade? You can call him Grimmbun-bun!" I spent 10 minutes on a colored sketch of what popped in my head and now its a new free Stetch Goal! Its a long road to go and short time to make the stretch goal, but I think it, and Pulp City are nifty."

From the Pulp City Update -
"When Pete Abrams contacted us about a cross promotion I admit I geeked out a bit. As a Sluggy fan from way back I knew Pete would just "get" Pulp City. So we discussed how to make things work and this was what we came up with. So if we can end the Kickstarter above $100,000 we will give all our Supreme Level or higher backers a free Grimmbun-bun.
The Grimm are highly susceptible to pop culture influences. When they find something the really love they tend to take on characteristics of that thing. Thus the strange and varied nature of the Grimms. When Grimmbun-bun discovered the web comic Sluggy Freelance he was doomed to wear a bunny suit. We aren't sure what he will become but we could be looking at Pulp City's first Level 1 Powerhouse!"

This all sounds fantastic! Grimmbun-bun has been born!

The pledge this scary little guy comes with is the 'Supreme' level. The sweet spot of the PC Kickstarter

This level stared with just the rulebook and 7 models for $90. After a load of stretch goals and backers its now got everything shown above. That's now NINETEEN models and all the extras for the same price!
There are still a couple of locked models as well. These will be added for free at $85K, 500 backers and the Grimmbun-bun at $100K taking the total to 21 minis. If things go further there could be even more!

You don't have long though. The Pulp City Kickstarter ends this Saturday!

Head over and see what you think then let us know here in the comments.

Pulp City Review - Ulthar Aquarius + Scorpio

Pulp City. A place where super powered Heroes and Villains battle each other only a daily basis with their amazing gifts and talents.
But it isn't only 'Supremes' that dwell in the city. There are vampires, gods, werewolves, talking apes, zombies, robots, ninjas, beings from other dimensions and even invading aliens!

The aliens are the group I will be looking at for the next couple of posts.
The Ulthar are a war-like race that enslave lesser beings (and even their own females) to serve them. They also have a very strong link to the residents of Atlantis.
The Ulthar invasion force has decided that all of the 'Supreme' beings on Earth make it a very worthy target and a challenge that they will not fail.

The leader of of this force and his hand picked bodyguard/assassin are -

Ra'Leigh the Aquarius Warlord and Stinger the Scorpio Fencer

The packaging for Aquarius and Scorpio is the usual Pulp City standard. Bright and attractive while still letting you know everything you need to.
The front has the artwork for the Supremes included and the back shows painted examples of the models and has the recruitment details. There is even a fluff teaser. The fluff stories are being added weekly to the Heroes and Villains section of the Pulp City website. Aquarius is up but Scorpio hasn't been posted yet.

The box contains 2 multi part metal models, 2 30mm round lipped bases and Supreme rules cards.
The rules cards are changing soon due to the Supreme Edition rules update and you can find the new rules >HERE<

Ra'Leigh, Aquarius Warlord is a Level 3 Leader Ulthar Villain. The head of the invasion force, he is a master of all types of war and combat. Very nasty at close quarters and skilled at leading the rest of the Ulthar force.
Stinger, Scorpio Fencer is a Level 1 Brawler Ulthar Villain. A fast and agile fighter, Stinger is very difficult to catch and hurt.

Aquarius comes in 4 parts. The cast for this model is quite nice. The cloth, armour and skin give several textures to play with. Packed full of detail.
There are mould lines running around the parts that need filing off but there aren't any vents or tabs that I could see. You will need to be a little careful with the staff as the shaft is quite thin and can bend easily. The tip of the staff does have a little bit of a miscast in the blades edge. This will need green stuff or similar to fill.
The collar is a great looking piece. You do need to bend it though to fit in the correct position.
A bit of work to get this model together and ready for painting, but I think it is worth it.

Scorpio is in 3 parts. Body, head and blade. The blade just slots in under the hands and the head is a flat connection. Simple to put together. Watch out for the very thin blade piece though. As it sits close to the body, it is easy to bend out of shape.
No vents or similar to remove and very minimal mould lines. A quick file and the job was done.
The detail and quality of the armour suit is very nice. The plates and different sections look protective but also very mobile. The character has been captured very well.

Once Aquarius is built he looks much more impressive. An imposing leader ready to take on any foe.
This more really was worth the work of cleaning all of the bits up.

Scorpio is a very different model. Full of action and movement. He really does look like he is putting force behind the thrust of the blade.

Price
This box set is 13.99 Euros from the Pulp City Store. That's roughly £12 or $18. A good price for 2 well detailed character models.
For those in the UK, there currently isn't a UK stockist for Pulp City. BUT, postage is usually around £3 and takes around a week. As good, if not better than, some of the big online stores.

Overall
The Ulthar are a great looking faction. Different to the usual 'supers' but they still fit into the game.
Armoured, water, warrior, alien invaders. Very cool!
These model did have a couple of issues with parts but I think they were worth the extra work in the end.
Final results give-

7 out of 10 Badger Points!

What are your thoughts?

Next time I will be looking at some of the other Ulthar Supremes. A Ninja and a Minotaur!

Pulp City Review - Riposte + Arquero

With the Pulp City Supreme Edition open beta still running, I thought it was about time I looked at some more of the PC range. With a MASSIVE and varied range of super powered beings, there are a lot of different things to look at.
Today we have

Riposte and Arquero

Riposte and Arquero come in a box set together. The front shows you the stunning artwork for these Supremes and the back has painted examples of the models, the level and faction details and a teaser of the fluff. These boxes may be changing in the near future though as Pulp City moves over to blister packs.
Riposte is a Level 2 Support model usable by both Heroes and Villains. She is a trained fencer and highly skilled in planning and preparation.
Arquero is a Level 1 Blaster that can also be taken by both Hero and Villain teams. A skilled archer, he is the perfect Supreme for covering the advance of others.
You can find the full background stories in the Heroes and Villains Section of the Pulp City website.

In the box you get 2 multi part metal models, 2 30mm round lipped bases and 2 Supreme rules cards.
I wont go into the cards at the moment as the rules are being updated in the new Supreme Edition open beta for the game. You can find the updated rules and Supreme cards >HERE<
Time to take a closer look at the model themselves.

Arquero is your classic 'archer' character. The model comes in 3 parts and is set in a nice aiming pose.
The quiver, bow, straps and jacket give quiet a few different textures to play about with. He is also sporting a classic hero full face mask that you could do almost anything with.
The detail is very sharp and the models only has a couple of small vents (where the air escapes the mould). There are in really easy places to remove. There is a small mould line running around the edge of the main body but it follows the jacket nicely and files off quickly.
The only thing that bothered me with this model was the thickness of the arrow. The thin metal means you need to be careful when lining up the arm and hand. If you bend it in the process, it will not be easy to bend back. (Speaking from experience)

Riposte is a pro fencer that comes in 2 pieces. I think the stance gets the fencing feel across well while the catsuit and hair add to the very feminine nature of the model.
The detail is really nice. A zip that runs down the front of her suit has every tooth visible and her hair just looks amazing.
The model is a very clean cast with no vents and a very tiny mould line around. The line was that small it could be ignored unless you are very picky when building models like I am.
The sword (I don't know the real name) is another thin piece. Easy to attach but you will want to be very careful with the model when you handle it. The sword is easy to bend out of shape.
I had considered replacing it with a sowing pin but never got around to doing it.

Time to checkout the full models.
(OK, I have been a little naughty here. I have been painting already and haven't shown the bare models)

My colour scheme was in no way inspired by a well known, bow carrying Avenger. Honest!
The Arquero model looks great when built. The eyes line up with the arrow nicely and the jacket still gives it a feel of action and movement. Very well done in my opinion.

This scheme was also not taken from an Avenger of any sort! (shhhh)
Riposte looks lovely. Simple to build, several textures make her a pleasure to paint and the model just looks fantastic in my opinion.

Price
This set is 13.99 Euros from the Pulp City Store. That's roughly £12 or $14 for the 2 models. I think that's a fairly good price compared to several other ranges on the market.

Overall
I do really like these models. As if you couldn't tell that already. The cast are great, the sculpts are really nice and the price is good.
My only issue is the thin arrow and sword that need so gentle handling.
All in all though,I would recommend them to anybody!

8 out of 10 Badger Points!

What do you think of them?

Next time it will be the turn of the invading Ulthar!

Hey! What's that Badger doing?

With the blog getting quieter at the moment, I thought I would update everybody on what I am working on.

The first 12 Pulp City models are prepared, built and undercoated. A nice range of models for me to try and learn how to paint without using only washes and drybrushing like I have been up to now. (Even though that is only about 40 models total)

A couple of days ago I received some goodies from the Games + Gears Kickstarter. 5 double ended Kolinsy sable brushes. I think there are still 2 more to come as well. These should help a lot with the PC painting. (Early birthday prezzie from the Galley Wench)
A few people have asked 'What is the point of double ended brushes?'. To be honest, I don't know. I just thought that £15 for 7 (effectively 14) decent brushes was a really good price.

This lot will also help with the painting.
When the new GW paint range came out I picked up the full box set. I have since added the Edging Paints to it for a massive range of colours. I also picked up the 'How to Paint Citadel Minis' book and DVD that came out at the same time as it contained several step by step articles using the paints I had.
But what are all of those pages in front?
They are the step by step painting guides from every White Dwarf since the paints came out! Cut out and slotted into the painting book to create an extensive reference library for somebody wanting to learn how to paint from scratch.

Robert in the Mini Addicts Anonymous Facebook group spotted my undercoated pic and suggested I try Zenith undercoating. This is a technique where you spray black all over and white from above to give instant shades and highlights when painting. His Dr.Tenebrous above shows the mini after undercoating this way.
I loved the idea of this so now have some white spray coming and will be holding off painting for a couple of days until it arrives.
My progress (or complete failures) will appear on here soon.

I remember seeing Zenith undercoating somewhere before. It was in a selection of Antimatter Games tutorials for Deep Wars minis that I have collected together in an earlier post. The Cavern Crawler above shows a much heavier white coat which will give a brighter model and even let you paint with just washes!
(Check out the link, awesome work)

Talking of Deep Wars, I spotted a post from  Lord Inar on the Antimatter Games Forum.
He is painting up some Ancients of Atalan and instead of the usual black bases he has used transparent blue ones from Malifaux to give them a more aquatic look.
Seemed like a great idea to me.

I couldn't see the bases that well in Lord Inars picture so decided to grab a pack from  The Troll Trader from about £3.50 and see what they were like close up.

Here you can see 2 Deep Wars models on the different bases. I like the black but I think I prefer the blue ones. Might need to try them out on the planned sea floor board after some painting to get the full effect before I pick up any more and decide I don't like them.
Or I could paint the black edges in a sand colour. That might work.

Which do you like better?

I had a box arrive this week as well from my friend Chris at the Disptches from the Rim Blog.
4 Heroclix models. Venom, Wonderman and 2 Agents.
Thanks soooooo much!
A random selection you might think? No, they are models I have been after for a reason..........

To make these 2!!!! The TICK and Arthur!

The Heroclix minis aren't the only random plastic model I have gained recently though.
The Doctor Who Adventures children's magazine has small figures free on the front every now and then. This week it was 12 Daleks for around £3 total.
They will need a bit of work to clean up and prepare, but they are going to make brilliant robot Minis in the new Pulp City Rules.

To give you an idea of the size and detail, here are 2 Daleks next to a standard 28-30mm model.
I think the 40mm base on the red one will work better and make them much more imposing.

After all of that, I still have this pile to build!

What have you been up to recently?

Pulp City Review: Shadow Mask + Tanuki

For part 2 of my Pulp City Reviews, wgere I show off some of the model for the new Supreme Edition Rules,  I will be looking at 2 members of the Jade Cult. The most recent team to enter the city.

Shadowmask and Tanuki

Shadowmask is one of the head assassins for the Green Emperor. Half man and half oni, he can take down hordes of opponents without even being seen.
In the game he is a Level 1 Jade Cult Villain Infiltrator that is fast, brutal and can even create a double of himself to distract the enemy.
Tanuki is a spirit oni that has taken the form of a Raccoon looking creature in Pulp City. Although he works for the Jade Cult he only does it to fulfil his own agendas. He has also been seeing feeding information to local Heroes!
Game wise Tanuki is a Level 1 Jade Cult Hero/Villain Support. A master of luck and focus means he is great at backing up any team.

The box is again very pretty. Full artwork, pained examples, model rules info and background teasers give you everything you need to know when picking it up.
As mentioned yesterday, these boxes may not be around for too much longer as Pulp want to move to individual blisters.

In the box you get 2 metal miniatures, 2 30mm round lipped bases and 2 Stat cards.
While the cards look nice, the new ones for Supreme Edition coming very soon look even better so I wont go into these for now.

Tanuki is a single piece model that is jam packed full of detail. Being a small model I was surprised to find that they had sculpt tons of extra pouches, tubes and different textures on it. Although I think they found a good balance between lots going on and too much going on.
Not a vent or tab to be seen and almost NO mould lines. A near perfect cast if there is such a thing.
How can you not like a magical Eastern Raccoon in a mask?

Shadowmask comes in 3 parts. The main body and separate arms. This model has a lot less on it than Tanuki but Pulp have still managed to pack in tons of detail in the robes, mask and leg wraps.
Due to the pose, the base tab is in a little bit of an odd place and will need to be removed so he can be positioned on something suitable. No other castings issues though. None at all!

After cutting Tanuki off of his base and putting him on a Fenris base topper I managed to get some better pictures. Here you can see that the pose captures a great sense of action without looking out of place.
Magic Raccoon in a mask! That's all I need to say!

Shadowmask was easy to build. The arms are a perfect fit and create a fantastic leaping /slashing pose.
For the base I have once again used Fenris Games toppers. With 2 small sections of wall it gives you an ideal place to stick the small tab on the bottom of his foot so he is dropping down onto a target.
You can see in these shots that he also has 3 metal claws on each hand. Hmm, there's a thought!
Any idea which black and yellow colour scheme I will be going for? ;)

Price
The box for these 2 models is 14E from the Pulp City Store. Around £12 or $18 at the current exchange rate. For 2 character models I think its a great price, better than a LOT of other games.
You also cant go wrong with 7 day delivery for £3 to the UK!

Overall
A really nice pair of miniatures here. The detail, quality, cost, poses and everything else are great!
There is only so many times you can say how much you like something. Go and buy them!!!!!

10 out of 10 Badger Points!

Tomorrow I will stay with the 'super' theme but will be looking at at different range. Reapers Chronoscope.
